Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister Roberto Fico was wounded in an attack on Wednesday, according to the country’s president.

Local media reported that Fico was shot and wounded while meeting supporters in the town of Handlova.

President Zuzana Caputova condemned what she described as a “cruel and reckless attack.”

“I’m shocked,” she wrote in a Facebook message. “I wish Roberto Fico the strength to recover from the attack at this critical moment.”

It was not immediately clear the extent of Mr Fico’s injuries. There was no immediate comment from the prime minister’s office or police.
