Over the past decade, the number of women using modern contraception in the region has almost doubled to 66 million.
“They like implants and injections the most,” a community nurse in Ghana told my colleague Stephanie Nolen. “It’s worry-free and private. They don’t even have to discuss it with their husbands or partners.”
Several factors are driving the change: More girls and women are learning about contraception through social media. They want to have careers and experiences that could be complicated by having children. And there are more contraceptive options, as well as improved roads and planning that are helping them reach more remote areas.
