An Israeli soldier was killed and another seriously wounded during a raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, the Israeli military said on Thursday, the latest in a series of violent Israeli attacks in the city.

The IDF said in a brief statement that the soldier killed was a sniper team commander “killed in action,” but gave few details. The official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that a Palestinian man was wounded in the attack.

Jenin, located in the northern West Bank, is a refugee camp established more than 70 years ago to provide shelter for Palestinians displaced by the war for the creation of Israel. Armed resistance bastion Israel has carried out regular raids there for years, but they have become more frequent since Hamas led a deadly assault on Israel on Oct. 7 that sparked the Gaza war.

The military detained 28 people in overnight raids and nine remain in custody, including Jamal al-Hawail, a member of the Fatah Revolutionary Council, according to a statement from the Palestinian Authority-linked Committee for Detainee and Former Detainee Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Club, a nongovernmental organization. The council sets policy for Fatah, the party that controls the Palestinian Authority. The Israeli statement did not comment on the arrests.

Hundreds of Palestinians were detained in the raids, which Israeli officials described as part of a counter-terrorism operation against Hamas and a continuation of the war.

UN human rights chief Volker Turk said this month that Israeli troops and settlers More than 500 people died Palestinian deaths have continued in the West Bank since Oct. 7. During the same period, Turke said, 24 Israelis, including eight members of the security forces, were killed in clashes in the West Bank and inside Israel that Israel described as attacks by Palestinians from the West Bank.
