Lebanese militant group Hezbollah fired its heaviest rocket barrage yet into Israel on Wednesday, targeting military bases and a weapons factory in response to overnight attacks. Killed a senior commander.
Commander Taleb Abdullah, also known as Abu Taleb, is one of the highest-ranking Hezbollah members killed since the Gaza war was sparked by a Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7. The Israeli offensive has prompted Hezbollah to launch cross-border attacks in support of Hamas.
As sirens rang across northern Israel on Wednesday, Israeli military radio said about 150 rockets were fired from Lebanon in an apparent response to the Israeli attack.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attacks on a series of military bases, including Mount Meron, which houses a military radar station about five miles south of the border. Hezbollah also claimed to have attacked a weapons factory in Plasan, a manufacturer of armored vehicles for the Israeli military.
There were no reports of casualties from the rocket attacks, according to the Israeli military, which said in a statement that some rockets were intercepted but several hit the ground and caused fires.
Israeli firefighters are working to put out the blazes, which came a week after another Hezbollah rocket attack sparked wildfires that forced Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to threaten “very severe action” on the Lebanese border.
The Israeli military said it had responded on Wednesday by striking multiple launch sites along the border. Lebanon’s state news agency reported Israel had carried out extensive airstrikes and bombing raids in the south of the country.
