At least two prison guards in northern France were killed on Tuesday when armed assailants ambushed a convoy at a road tollbooth and freed a prisoner, French authorities said.
Eric Dupont-Moretti, French Minister of Justice said on social media platform The incident occurred near the town of Incavelle in the Eure region northwest of Paris. Three other prison guards were also seriously injured.
President Emmanuel Macron said the attack “shocked us all.”
“The country stands with the families, the injured and their colleagues,” he say on X.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin say on X “Hundreds” of police officers have been deployed to capture escaped prisoners and their attackers.
“We are doing everything we can to find these criminals,” Mr Darmanin said.
Alexandre Rassaërt, president of the Earle local council, said in a statement statement He was “horrified to learn of the massacre that had taken place.”
He said: “I sincerely hope that the killer commando responsible for this bloody attack will be arrested quickly.”
