A seaside restaurant partially collapsed on the Spanish island of Mallorca on Thursday, killing at least four people and injuring more than 20, with others possibly trapped in the rubble, officials said.
Photos taken before the accident showed the restaurant, Medusa Beach Club, had three floors, with large terraces supported by columns on the middle and upper floors.
Video from the state RTVE Images from other news outlets showed at least part of the terrace collapsed to the ground, with rescue workers wearing hard hats and reflective vests searching the rubble for victims.
The collapse occurred around 8 p.m. local time, and it was not immediately clear whether buildings behind the terraces also collapsed.
Emergency services in Mallorca Say on X Four people were confirmed dead and 21 injured, but Spanish media later said officials had raised the toll to 27. Officials did not reveal the nationalities of the victims.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote on the 10th that he was closely following the rescue efforts and had made all the resources of the national government available to local and regional leaders.
Mallorca is the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and a popular holiday destination, packed with holidaymakers from northern Europe for much of the year. Although it is separate from the region of Catalonia, many islanders speak Catalan, which is the official language of the Balearic Islands.
Medusa is a restaurant and music venue located in Playa de Palma, close to Palma, the capital and largest city of the island chain. It is located on Carthage Street, facing the Bay of Palma.
