When the British opposition achieves a clear victory, the transition of power moves at a ruthless pace.

this Cabinetry ManualThe document, which lays out official guidance for the process, says, “The current prime minister and government will resign immediately and the king will invite the leader of the party that won the election to form a government.”

In practice, “immediately” means Friday morning. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s constituency is in northern England. He held on to his seatThe announcement was made just before 5 a.m. local time, and he flew back to London shortly afterwards.

Outgoing prime ministers usually have a final set of photographs taken with their families at Downing Street, their homes and workplaces during their time in office.

Sunak is expected to make his final speech at Downing Street around 10:30 a.m. local time (5:30 a.m. ET).

He will then drive to Buckingham Palace, usually followed by a news helicopter, for a private meeting with the current King, Charles III, to announce his resignation.

The appointment of a new leader also takes the form of a private meeting with the king, usually after a resignation. This is known as “kissing the hand”, although it involves little ceremony and no kissing.

The two sides are expected to shake hands and take photographs before the Prime Minister makes another speech in Downing Street, this time by Mr Starmer. The speech is expected to be delivered at around 12:20pm local time.

It is standard practice for a new prime minister to move into 10 Downing Street almost immediately and be greeted by permanent civil servants on arrival.

Starmer will then name other ministers. There is usually not much suspense: Britain’s opposition parties maintain a “shadow cabinet” of candidates for government jobs. The Labour Party told British news media that Starmer is expected to announce his full cabinet around 8 p.m. (3 p.m. ET).

Further appointments of young players are expected on Saturday, with action suspended in the afternoon as the England men’s football team take on Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.
