Bolivian military accused of coup attempt

Members of the Bolivian military gathered outside the presidential palace on Wednesday as President Luis Arce On social media platform Xwhich appears to be a general trying to capture a government building.

Standing outside the presidential palace on Wednesday afternoon, surrounded by members of the military, General Juan José Zúñiga declared that Bolivia’s army, air force and navy had been “mobilized.”

“The police forces are also with us,” he said in La Paz, the country’s administrative capital.

Ministers were meeting inside when the army arrived. At X, Arce, a leftist and handpicked successor to former President Evo Morales, condemned the action.

“Democracy must be respected,” he said. It was initially unclear whether Mr Arce was inside the presidential palace.

Mr. Morales Claiming a “coup”, “At the moment, armed forces personnel and tanks are deployed in Plaza Murillo. Let us call on social movements in the countryside and cities to defend democracy,” he said on social media.

Local news media reported that General Zuniga was fired this week, and some people believed it was related to his comments about Morales.
